So I have been tagged by the lovely Lisa-Renee from Juxtaposition Design blog!

The point and purpose of this tag is to share six things about yourself – well, I can do that – I’m absolutely fascinating and in fact – Me is my favorite subject!!!!!!!

So, OK here I go!

  1. I spend more money at the fruit markets each week on flowers than fruit and veggies…Flowers are my indulgence… I need their colour and beauty -also its a great way to ‘re zhooshed’ my house each week!!
  2. I am quite useless, and can be a bit evil without coffee in my system.  And I am very snobby about my coffee! It bothers me that I live near so many cafes and only a few do really good coffee – consistently! (-I have been known to rant about this sometimes…OK, to anyone who will listen!)
  3. I suffer from a mild case of Tourettes Syndrome ** when I’m walking through Ikea and see people about to buy sofas and chairs (people, just don’t do it!-pour your hard earned dollar down the sink instead)*** (- I have ALSO been known to rant about this sometimes….OK, to anyone who will listen!!!)
  4. I LOVE  the kiddie find a word puzzle in the Sunday paper and rush to do it and find the secret shape hiding within each week! I have NO interest whats so ever in the grown up puzzles.
  5. I am currently hoarding incandescent light globes. But that is because as of 2009 in Australia you will no longer be able to purchase normal incandescent globes – only fluro nasties that I CAN NOT  and will not live with.  This is because our previous government (Oh SO yay for that right there! -total Bush brown noser!!!) decided to do nothing else about the impending Global warming – but just to look busy – decided to ban incandescant globes. I’m ALL for doing good for the world and I am in fact a ‘Eco-Sensitive’ designer, but this law is ridiculous and a total band aid. I for one will gladly switch every lamp and light to an efficient and warm glow globe when they exist (nup – the LEDs aren’t up to it yet & I promise I AM doing a lot of research in this area!) – but not fluro. Its not the answer and I refuse to live in a fluro world. (hmm – you getting the picture on my rants now?!!!!) So anyway, I am stock piling the good warm white globes. ****
  6. I get a lot of work done (well, the idea sketching and idea summoning part) when I get a pedicure and sit in the massage chair! And when my head is overfilled with all the design projects I am working on, this is where I go to ‘work it through’! (Hmm..i wonder if i can claim as a work expense?…interesting!

Ahh, thats kinda fun actually!

The rules of tagging: link to the person who tagged you, list the rules, tag 6 others, and leave them a comment to let them know you’ve tagged them
OK – So I am meant to ON tag - but……I’m a rule breaker!!! but I’ve never been a chain mail kinda gal, so Im mixing things up & leaving it open to all!!! – come on lovely readers – tell me SIX things about you!!!
Oh GO ON!!! I’m giving you a polite and gentle nudge rather than a guilt trip DO it!!!
** Touretts Syndrome – not really & no offence intended to anyone suffering from this real disease.
*** Ikea – I am a designer – and its my job to sway people in the way of quality furnishings -I have nothing against Ikea – in fact some of their designs are fabulous and oh so handy! but I wouldn’t personally purchase a sofa or chair there as I have quality issues with those- but would buy the other bits & pieces -um, does this make sense to anyone but me?!!
**** Incandescant light globes are used in my home only in lamps – LED’s are perfectly suitable for overheads ect. Fluros – not in my life thank you.
Psst – How cute is that painting! Its by a friend of mine Daniel Truscott – I love his work & covet sooo soo muchly!! Check out some of his other work here

Can I leave it in your comments? I don’t have the energy to write a post with pictures :(

    1. I am addicted to my RSS feed. Someone needs to stage a design-blog intervention
    2. I have 3 pets: 2 cats and a dog, my cat Laser is by far my favorite and I’m not apologizing for it. Hey, they all get love.
    3. I would do just about anything to ditch my (admittedly awesome) day job as a freelance web designer to go decorate houses
    4. I can’t drink coffee, it upsets my stomach SO BADLY, but I love the smell of the coffee aisle at the store. I drink Chai, yummm
    5. I want to fly to Australia to steal the painting that is behind Camilla’s kitchen table
    6. Speaking of flying to Australia, I’ve never left North America but would even give up my decorating dreams to a life filled with lots and lots of travel.

From a fellow incandescent bulb hoarder, good to see others stockpiling to avoid this silly nonsense. So far I have about 2,500 bulbs. My two local Bunnings stores have been getting rid of them cheap over the last year. I also bough several shopping trolleys full of them when the Australian factory making them closed a few years ago.
Reasons why incandescent lamps are my preferred form of domestic lighting:
1)I get 13hrs a day of UV rays from fluorescent lamps at work,
2)CFL’s interfere with AM radio and some remote controls,
3)CFL’s can’t be used with dimmers and certain kinds of timer,
4)CFL’s require more resources to manufacture and contain toxic components,
    5)CFL’s don’t tolerate voltage surges,
6)CFL’s take a few minutes to reach full brightness,
7)CFL’s give off an unpleasant monochromatic colour spectrum,
8)Incandescent bulbs just look more attractive.
I could keep going but I’m sure you get the point.

  8. Camilla Says:

    Hi John -Welcome!
2500! wow – you must have some serious storage space to hoard that many!!
I totally agree with you on ALL of your points. though personally I dont need to worry about the AM radio!!! -A golden microphone gal I sure aint!!!!!

I’m kinda hoping that by the time I have burned through my 50+ (a pittance next to yours- but will last me a while!) that there will be a decent alternative on the market. (though will get some more on my next Bunnings visit – JUST incase!!!) psst – the Phillips softtone give off a fabulous light!!

  11. Matt Says:

I’d like to share a point with you all regarding the use of incandescent lighting.

Anyone who disagrees with the phase-out of incandescent lamps simply does not know all the facts. How can I make such a claim you ask? Well I currently work as a consulting electrical engineer, which involves numerous things, including lighting design and specification in new buildings and existing fitouts. And I am sick and tired of hearing the same incorrect excuses for why we shouldn’t phase out incandescent lamps.

    To address John H’s comments:
    1) Firstly regarding UV light, testing done (by Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)) has said: “Of the tested lamps, those with the highest UV levels, measured at a distance of 10cm over a period of 8 hours was equivalent to spending approximately 6 minutes in the midday summer sunshine in Brisbane and 7 minutes in Melbourne.”
Now unless you work 10cm from your fluoros at work, you’re experiencing a fraction of this (as the intensity decreases according to the inverse square law, e.g. double your distance, and intensity is 1/4).

2)CFL’s interfere with AM radio and some remote controls

No, they will not. Compact and linear fluorescent lamps operate on switching cycles of approx. 40kHz, whereas AM radio is specified as being 148.5kHz and above. As for infrared remotes, the signals sent are digital, not analog, meaning the ‘noise’ associated with fluorescent lamps in the IR spectrum is easily filtered out (it is for this reason FM is preferred over AM for radio clarity, as amplitude is irrelevant in the signal).

3)CFL’s can’t be used with dimmers and certain kinds of timer

CFLs and linear fluorescents can in fact be used with dimmers, just check the label to ensure the lamp supports it (usually all linears can be dimmed without worry). As for timers, we use contacted PE cell circuits on external lighting on almost every job we do, and for those we don’t, we use timers. Timers are a simple contactor/relay switch, and hence are easily connected to basically any circuit, including CFLs.

4)CFL’s require more resources to manufacture and contain toxic components

While the manufacturing costs and resources may be slightly higher with CFLs, have you ever considered the increased emissions and resources needed to provide electricity for incandescent lamps? It is a widely accepted fact that fluorescents are many times more efficient than incandescent (~3-5X more for CFL, and 5-8X more efficient for linear eg T5). Now if you were to run 10 x 100W incandescent lamps for 1 hour, you would need approx. 0.5kg of coal to be burnt. Compare this to only 100g required for CFLs, or only ~70g for linear fluoros. When you also consider that CFLs last around 10 times longer than incandescents, it quickly starts to add up that CFLs do not use more resources over the lifespan of the product.
As for mercury, another commonly touted fact for the non-use of fluorescent lighting, most are unaware of the fact that trace mercury is found in coal. Yes, look it up, it is true, along with sulphur and others which create harmful gasses and toxins when released into the atmosphere.
Now, if we look again at the efficiency of fluorescents vs incandescents, and see that they are at least 3 times more efficient, it can be easily calculated that there is between 25-50% less mercury contained in CFLs. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp#Mercury_emissions if you still don’t believe me, or just use google if you still don’t trust wikipedia)

    5)CFL’s don’t tolerate voltage surges

All electronic components must be able to withstand surges and sags in line voltage on the mains network, as the network specified voltage is (in Aust anyway) 230V +6% -10%. Voltage drop across the network means you will not always see the exact line voltage at the socket anyway, hence the need for the ability of electronic appliances (including CFLs) to deal with changes in voltage.
If you have issues with surges or sags damaging electrical equipment in your home, you have electrical supply issues which can be damaging to your equipment (obviously), or even dangerous to yourself, and these should be reported to your utility.

6)CFL’s take a few minutes to reach full brightness

This used to be the case. Yes they will not be at 100% brightness upon turning them on, but they wil be at approximately 80% when initially switched on, and reach 100% by 60 seconds.

7)CFL’s give off an unpleasant monochromatic colour spectrum

Again, this is referring to technology which is decades old. The ‘spectrum’ you are referring to is colour temperature (or color, depending on where you are from), and this differs depending of the application (or personal preference) you intend to use it in. The ‘warmer’ end of the spectrum (~2000-3000 Kelvin) is what most people expect in their home, and is usually the temperature emitted by incandescent. Cooler temperatures (4000-5000 K) are usually found in teh office due to their higher colour rendering index (CRI is a measure of spread of spectrum emitted by a light source. Higher CRIs mean better visibility and distinction on colour). CFL and fluorescent all come in a variety of color temps including those emitted by incandescent, and are not just monochromatic any more.

    I could go on…

  15. Daniel Truscott Says:

Totally agree with the fluro thing. They are banned from my studio.
You can however get ‘daylight fluro bulbs’. I dont think they make them in the lamp size yet. I have no science to back up the specs but they do deliver a wider spectrum of light.
Your design rocks My love and thank you for showing these good people my work.
I will have to let you use my house as a canvas one day!

Howdy would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a tough time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
