Stuck for dinner conversation?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I was at a rather odd dinner party recently *, the dinner conversation went through some very awkward pauses and it got me thinking, should it be mandatory to invest in good conversation ‘art’ pieces to assist in dinner table chatter?!!

I went on the hunt for examples sure to break the pause:

Now this painting would surely conjure up a lot of different topics, though could be a bit of a political hot potato and maybe that’s not always the best topic at the dinner table!  (and i know that from experience!!)

Not wanting that hot potato in your lap, this could be the kind of thing to spruce up your dining wall. Its got me thinking all lovey and springy and stuff that makes the heart flutter.  This is very generous also, as if your guest isn’t into the fluffy lovey stuff, there is the option of dot counting, and wouldn’t that be a fun dinner date!

Maybe you are wanting a little more modern and groovy vibe at the dinner table?

This neon grid ticks my boxes and makes me wanna talk all things Blade Runner

(I could go on about that topic for a while!)

Maybe you are more of a nature lover and want that kind of talk at your table?

(This butterfly freaks me out a little though! feels like its ready to attack!)

Of course Pop art is guaranteed to loosen some tongues. EVERY one has an opinion to share about that topic! -don’t they?

Or maybe the conversation you want at your table is more of a monotone nature? Safe chat can only be good in some circles!

Now this art option is either rude, or genius!! Simply plaster the days newspaper on the wall and:

A. you can simply read over your guests shoulder in those quiet moments, or

B. Select topics to discuss!!

Hmm,  this could work for those international guests looking to improve their language skills?!!

A is for apple…

Or those wanting a bit more brain teasing – find a word! (love that game – its got me through some tough times!!!)

And now as this is MY own dinner table, I wonder how this reflects on me! These creepy people watching over our daily consumption of goodness! I can tell you it does get the conversation flowing, especially when people hear what the title of the piece is called “Gods contemplating the fate of the universe” and also when we point out the rips in the canvas due to the fella not fixing to the wall when he was given lots of ‘encouragement’ to do so.  (no, don’t read nagging into this!)

Sometimes when its just me and the fella I read him the numbers. It annoys him greatly which I don’t quite understand -as he is a nerd and I thought nerds liked that kind of thing!!!

On the topic of dinner conversation art, I had to include an image (be it a bad one!) of a recent painting I had commissioned for a project I have been working on.  Being just a small and dainty painting at 3 metres, the piece is designed around dinner conversation!

While it may look just like a big wave to you, to those in the know its the story of Medusa and how the winged horse came to be -hmm, you totally see it now don’t you!!

And well, if a painting on the wall isn’t going to get them talking, surely a giant tree trunk in the corner would get even the most difficult of guests chatting. Surely? If not, well you tried your best and odds are they wont be making a return visit!!!

* – if you think this relates to you and the fabulous dinner we had – it totally doesn’t. You were great, fantastic, lovely AND hilarious! Its not you at all, it was totally someone else. for real!

Cough, splat

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Cough, cough…seems I’ve gone and caught myself another TAG!

Turns out this tag is just the thing to help me skive off from the boring paperwork I am meant to be doing!

So Tag task 1.  Show a picture of your desk

I can do that! But as I have crappy photography skills – or is that camera? I may have gotten a little carried away when creatively editing said images!! I’m sure you can deal.

As you can see my Juju takes crowning glory behind my head as I work away saving one house from a design disaster after another. I like to think that it reflects my halo that is normally invisible to the naked eye.

My computer is pretty much crap, so deserves no attention here whats so ever. One day a Mac pro book will be mine. One day….

My desk

My desk

This is my view from my desk.

The table (not the right shape for the space – but sometimes you just gotta work with what you got!) is full of fabric samples and schemes I am working on.  Trevurr the cat likes to keep an eye on my work and sometimes I find he has done a little creative editing!

View from my desk

My bookshelf to my left houses some of my gazillion magazines. I have many more, but are going to edit and only keep the uber goodies that I just must have.

a few magazines

a few magazines

Tag task 2.  Open the 6th picture folder on your computer, open the 6th photo and blog it.

Um, obviously I ain’t going to really chose the 6th of the 6th -it was a really boring picture…. So I am taking liberty and just posting in fact the next one (like you’d know!) a random picture of my work that I am happy to share with the blogosphere!

So I guess its now my duty to infect someone else with this tag. As its a visual one, there are a few of my blogging fellows that I am curious about seeing where they are coming up with their witty and sarky posts – so yep, that means -TAG you’re it – Raina of If the Lampshade fits” fame! Don’t get mad, get flattered!!!

For the rest of you out there – consider yourselves tagged too.. or not – your prerogative!

Hand over the keys please.

In the current issue of Australian shelter mag Inside Out, there is photographic proof of what I have long suspected is true. The Truman show is real, and yes, I am the star of it.

Can you pick it up where you are in the world?!!! Do you get reception?

Anyway, the photographic proof of which I speak is a house that has long been in MY head: the location – Byron Bay Hinterland (soooo beautiful there), the of view of rolling hills I desire to stare out at, just the whole sensibility of the joint being a well thought out sustainable build and I even dig the frisky red rabbit keeping an eye on things!

If it turns out the Truman/Camilla show isn’t a happening (ah, doubt that!), then the architect and current* home owner  Sharon Fraser and I are kindred spirits cause I love it so.

The bunny is on the lookout for me!

Are sunken lounges making a come back?

Yeah, those are views I could look at.

Not such a bad scene to wake up to

Now this, is very cool indeed.

If you are wanting the TV to be the focus of the room its just like magic-now you see it… but suddenly there is more to life and you don’t want the tele to be the focus of all – so whoosh and kaboom and now you don’t!

If that doesn’t quite explain to your liking, then try this instead: Using a mechanical rope and pulley system, the painting moves up or down to cover the TV screen or not. The concept is way impressive anyway – but then in this case its a painting of fish – well, that just rocks my world people!

This rocks my world

Obviously for those who know me once I move in there will be many many more cushions (Yes, this yet another admission of ‘interior’ addictions I have)  undoubtedly  more colour and general stuff -you know a nick-nak or two!!! But I am confident it will still do it all justice!

And so how about a round of applause for my first scan job here at Designalogue!!!

Oh thank you, thank you! Now if I can only work out how to capture an image in a site using Flash……. (you people seem to do so, but I no can!)

*current – consider this marching orders! I’m moving in – oh but don’t freak out or anything i will be nice about it all!!

loving and lurving and that.

“Valentine Schmalentine” are the words spoken on the subject of Valentines day in my house.  ”It’s a marketing dream! We are living the ‘lurve’ day in and day out baby girl!” is what Fella tells me year after year…

I do actually agree with him, but that’s makes for a very boring blog post, so in the interest of that:

Screw that!! Shower me with gifts and bejewel me with all types of bedazzled goodness. As Britney sings “Gimme Gimme MORE”

So in the spirit of more and more and then some MORE again, oh and a little of schmoopy love – I thought I would put together a list of things I lurve…..

Sigh with me….Ahhhh lurve…..

I lurve this room by designer Katie Leede. I lurve the colours, I lurve the lamp that reminds me of the the ‘triffids‘, I lurve the colours in the painting and cushion painting matchy -you know… the whole shebang makes my heart a flutter and tweet some.

Loving that Katie Leede

I lurve this picture taken from the once was great, and is no more Domino Magazine. The colours rock my world and I have a desire to peel the apples skin and see how long I can make the skin chain.

Domino was a great mag once.

Domino was a great mag once.

I love the idea of prettying myself up at a dressing table in the morning. But who am I kidding – even if I had the pretty space, I wouldn’t use it! As much as I may kid myself, I wouldnt use it, I aint no girlie girl. Never was, never will be.

Still, I lurve shoes….and pedicures. Add coffee to the mix and they are my weaknesses.

Domino was loved..

Domino was loved..

So its a crappy picture, so do what you have to to try and understand what i am talking about – squint, tilt your head, what ever..but I luuuurve these cushions on my sofa. Sometimes whilst firmly planted upon the sofa, I look at the colour combination of the lime and turquoise – both in uber fabulous fabrics and I’m telling you, my heart sighs with the lurve I’m feeling.

Loving my cushions

I’ve said it before, and bound to again – I totally Lurve these light boxes. They do rock my world.

Loving a lump

I lurve the art of a friend of mine Daniel Truscott. His work is so bold and graphic and totally rocks my world.

Oh and I lurve love this. If you know what it is from, the the odds are that I love YOU too…

Do you know?

Do you know?

So, I cant be prattling about the lurve without mentioning the munchkins. This is my three year old niece who is simply put, super cute. These photos of her first ligit salon haircut and her expression makes me laugh every-time – what a diva!

Love the little things

There is heaps more that I lurve and love. But I am in need of more caffeine and thought I might see some day light today! Enjoy the love people! Happy Valentine -if that be your thing!

And now back to the pretty…

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

After some serious moments I need me some more pretty to look at.

I spied this fabulousness over at Simply Grove and new it was an image I would be happy to look at over and over. Ahh.

Last year I did just a day course of basket weaving with my lovely mumma, we both came away with a small curl-less than a palm size of wool and dried grass…nothing on these gorgeousies! Makes me appreciate the workmanship in each one that much more.

Looking at it again – its either a HUGE wall, or a tiny chaise!?!

During tough economical times…

Hmm, wise words me thinks… and something I am keeping very much in mind for my own business especially during these trixty times!

My new website is being busily worked on as we speak, and should be up really really soon….oh I hope! (only been years in the coming!)

Excuse me while I get very serious for a moment…

It feels wrong not to comment on the situation that is currently happening here in Victoria where I live. So rather than post some eye candy pictures today,  bare with me for a moment while I talk of some serious matters.

On Saturday we experienced the hottest day ever on record – 46.5 degrees Celsius (115.7 F) -horrible and yet again an uncivilised heat. Most of Australia has been suffering from a drought for the past several years, so needless to say its dry and with the recent heat wave, extremely dry, so much that many of the cities trees look like its Autumn (fall) as the leaves have been burnt off and fallen to the ground.

While I overheated, yet safe and sound over the weekend at my inner city home, bush fires sprung up in the bush on the outskirts of the city and have raged ever since.  Entire townships have been decimated and the loss of human life is already in triple digits and so far over 750 homes destroyed.  And the amount of animal life will be extreme.

I have not been affected directly by this devastation, but still I just feel so heart sick and sad for those who have lost so much.

It is expected to be found that the fires have been purposely lit, which is just incomprehensible to me that someone would do so as kicks. I don’t get it, and as a normally peaceful person, I hope the persons responsible have a world full of bad karma coming their way.

Alive, un melted.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

JUST in case you were starting to worry – all is well! I have made it through the ridiculous heat wave we have just gone through -just!

Now I am really busy catching up on all the work I should have done, but couldn’t do last week or I really would have melted!

So for now, I will just leave you with some gorgeous bedroom eye candy!
